The effect of Suboccipital Muscle Inhibition on Active Mouth Opening in Patients with a Temporomandibular Disorder.

Introduction: The effect of suboccipital muscle inhibition, on active mouth opening (AMO), in patients with a temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

Relevance of the dissertation: As more than 40% of the population suffers from a temporomandibular disorder effective treatment is necessary. This thesis will contribute to the improvement of osteopathic treatment of TMD patients.

Research Question: Does suboccipital muscle inhibition (SMI) has a significant effect on the AMO in patients with TMD?

Hypothesis of the dissertation: SMI increases AMO in TMD Patients. 

Method: Sixty-seven participants (age 18-70) were divided into two groups: one with TMD and one without. Both groups were treated with SMI and pre- and post-AMO were measured. Eighteen participants were assigned to the control group (Group1) and forty-nine participants were assigned to the group with a TMD (Group 2). Group 2 was divided into three subgroups: 2a. muscular problems, 2b. disc problems, 2c. joint problems.  

Results: Post-AMO was significantly bigger than the Pre-AMO for both groups 1 and 2. The results showed that the mean increase in AMO of subgroup 2a was significantly bigger then the other subgroups.  

Conclusion: SMI has a positive effect on AMO in patients suffering from a TMD containing a myofascial component.
