Short course description
Advanced Spinal Manipulation Level 2 is an intensive two-day practical programme designed to develop and refine existing HVLA manipulation skills.
The programme progresses beyond basic manipulation techniques and introduces a wider range of advanced techniques, modifications and adaptations for the spine and peripheral joints.
Participants will explore advanced manipulation of the cervical spine, cervicothoracic junction, thoracic spine, ribs, thoracolumbar junction, lumbar spine and pelvis, together with selected upper- and lower-extremity techniques.
Alongside the practical teaching, the course explores clinical reasoning, patient selection, safety, screening, manipulation dosage and force, current scientific evidence and the neurophysiological principles associated with spinal manipulation.
What to expect from the PAM
This is a predominantly practical, hands-on programme.
Participants can expect to:
- Develop and refine existing HVLA manipulation skills.
- Learn multiple advanced manipulation techniques and adaptations.
- Explore different patient positioning, leverage, vectors and technique modifications.
- Develop greater confidence and finesse when applying manipulation.
- Review clinical reasoning and appropriate technique selection.
- Review screening, contraindications and safety considerations.
- Discuss current scientific evidence and contemporary concepts relating to the mechanisms and clinical effects of spinal manipulation.
- Integrate the techniques into existing osteopathic clinical practice.
The programme is based upon OMT Training’s established Spinal Manipulation Level 2 course, which is delivered as 16 hours of face-to-face practical education. The current OMT programme can be viewed here:

Learning objectives
By the end of the programme, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate a range of advanced HVLA manipulation techniques for the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and pelvic regions.
- Demonstrate selected manipulation techniques for the upper and lower extremities.
- Adapt manipulation techniques according to patient presentation, body type, positioning and clinical circumstances.
- Apply appropriate vectors, leverage, preload and thrust parameters while prioritising controlled technique and patient safety.
- Apply appropriate clinical reasoning when selecting and modifying manipulation techniques.
- Recognise relevant precautions, contraindications, red flags and safety considerations associated with spinal manipulation.
- Discuss contemporary scientific evidence concerning the biomechanical and neurophysiological effects of manipulation.
- Incorporate examination, treatment and re-examination into the clinical application of manipulation.
- Demonstrate increased technical competence, confidence and clinical reasoning in the use of advanced manipulation techniques.
